Castiglione del Lago Hotels - Umbria

Gazing out over the waters of Lake Trasimeno, protected by a thick perimeter wall and impressive fortress, Castiglione del Lago, in the province of Perugia, is justly considered to be one of Italy's most beautiful medieval towns. Originally this town, now firmly joined to the main land, constituted the Lake's fourth island. Ferry boats depart regularly to the three remaining islands of Maggiore, Minore and Polvese.

The town of Castiglione is home to two important monuments: the 13th century Leone Castle and the 16th century Palazzo della Corgna, linked to each other by an enchanting walkway.

The construction of the Castle was ordered by Emperor Frederick II, whilst the building of the Palazzo was commissioned by the Marquis of Castiglione, Ascanio della Corgna, whose valiant actions are narrated in many a fresco within the palazzo. Also worthy of visit, if only for the marvellous stuccoes and artworks which adorn their walls, are the Churches of Santa Maria Maddalena and San Domenico di Guzman.
