Castello di Sismano Historical Residences
Castello di Sismano Sismano
Set amidst spectacular scenery, Castello di Sismano was one of many medieval strongholds which were built to defend the city of Todi. Over the centuries, nobles, princes and popes all resided in this castle hamlet which has recently been converted into Umbria's most exclusive historic residence.
In medieval times, the hilltop Castle hamlet of Sismano represented the heart of a small farming community and was inhabited by the families who diligently tilled the fields of Sismano's large agricultural estate. Located in the 18th century building known as the Canonica, two medieval cottages, and in the Villa Piana, Castello di Sismano's suites and apartments are decorated in traditional Tuscan country style, with hand crafted furnishings, romantic fireplaces, and exposed ceiling beams. The careful integration of acclimatization, satellite television and internet connectivity ensures hotel-standard comfort.
Castello di Sismano's farm estate is still very much alive and kicking, the 1000 hectares of agricultural land representing a colorful patchwork of cultivated fields, woods, olive groves and meadows in which the highly prized Chianina cows graze. Guests staying at the castle are welcome to explore the estate, part of which is now a game reserve. A panoramic corner of the medieval hamlet provides the idyllic setting for the farm stay's outdoor swimming pool, and the ideal place in which to relax after a morning spent walking in the glorious Umbrian countryside.
With seasonal menus featuring dishes prepared with the estate's own Chianina beef, wild game and extra virgin olive oil, Castello di Sismano's "I Due Papi" restaurant is an excellent starting point for those guests keen to get a taste of the traditional cuisine of Umbria. Yet more culinary delights can be enjoyed in the nearby cities of Todi, Orvieto, Terni, Narni and Spoleto, all of which are famous not only for their superb food and wine but also for their beautifully conserved historic buildings and fascinating museums.
