Fancy a holiday in the Duke of Montefeltro's hunting lodge?

Three reasons why you'll love it here

  1. A holiday in Federico da Montefeltro's hunting lodge
  2. A splash in Castello di Magrano's gorgeous pool
  3. Hunting for Umbria's delicious mushrooms and truffles

Maybe it's the incredibly peaceful landscapes of Umbria, or the age old of charm an ancient stronghold: whatever the reason, Castello di Magrano, in the countryside just outside the medieval city of Gubbio, is one of those places you'll fall head-over-heels in love with, from the moment you arrive.

It was 1431 when the all powerful Duke, Federico da Montefeltro, transformed the castle into his personal hunting lodge, complete with tower, courtyard and sumptuous salons fit for a king. Today, guests staying at Castello di Magrano choose from 10 bedrooms and 2 suites located in the main body of the building or in the annex, and a two bedroom apartment with living room and kitchenette, in the attic. Breakfast is served in the large dining room. Half board accommodation (breakfast and typical Umbrian dinner) is available for groups of 14 people(8 in low season) or more .

The grounds of the castle are as beautiful as the building itself. This is where guests spend much of their time, strolling in the shade of the secular trees or lazing in the sun by the pretty swimming pool. Perched on a hill above the river Chiasco, in the district of Carbonesca, the castle is surrounded by a large agricultural estate, abundant in flora and fauna. A great choice for an active outdoor holiday, Castello di Magrano lies within minutes of Umbria's Monte Cucco Discovery Park, where to go trekking, mountain biking, caving and, for the really adventurous, even free-flying!

Whatever you do, make sure you don't leave Umbria without having visited the region's stunning art cities. One of the finest, Gubbio, is only a 15 minute drive away from Castello di Magrano whilst, in little more than an hour, holidaymakers reach Perugia, Assisi, Gualdo Tadino, Nocera Umbra and Umbertide.
